Standard Edition versus Deluxe Edition
The Standard Edition of Voltaire’s Philosophical Dictionary is published in Adobe PDF® format; that is, each page of the original 1874 book has been scanned and then the entire book is saved as a PDF file. This gives the reader an exact duplicate of the 1874 edition of the book.
The Deluxe Edition is also saved in PDF format but it is also searchable. After scanning the entire book, the file goes through an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program, so a complete copy of the text of the book is saved underneath the PDF file, and this renders the book searchable. In order to ensure the greatest accuracy of the OCR program, the index, which occurs at the beginning of the book, was first used to create a custom dictionary of all the names, places, and subjects in the index. Having the correct spelling of every word in the index greatly increases the accuracy of the OCR program.
