Description

Will Durant writes about Buckle that he was "half dead when he was born" for he died at the age of 41 years. He could read nineteen languages, according to McCabe, and was one of the first chess players in Europe. Buckle's History of Civilization in England was a monumental accomplishment.

These 3 volumes are basically the documented research the author did for his history; they are as comprehensive as the history itself.

The compliation of facts, annecdotes, and traditions is immense, useful as well as interesting. We learn, for example, that priests used their saliva in baptism; that men drank their mistresses' urine as a salute to their health. While these two examples may be disgusting, they are not as disgusting when we are told what bodily fluid, and it was not spit, the early christians priests put into the bread used for holy communion.

Vol 1, pp. lv + 598, Vol 2, pp. 704, Vol. 3, pp. 708 + 24 pages of publisher's catalog.
