Description

Quoted from the editor's "Foreword."

"Any book of jokes or collection of clever sayings carries with it, by virtue of the cumulative
effect of such a mass of material on the same subject, a certain inevitable inanity. Some subjects, also, lend themselves to humorous treatment more gracefully than others. Some have been more popular with writers than others. Surely nothing is more popular, in itself, than kissing — but jokes about it have a tendency to display a persistent sameness. I know, and can speak with complete assurance, for I confess to having read a great deal of material along these lines. It took some little time to collect a mass of data sufficient even to compile this small book, and although I have been forced, through a necessity I could not avoid, to include a lot of material that I did not personally care a great deal for, I still incline to the opinion that this collection, as such, is unique in published books of humor. The humor may not always be of the best, but some of it is of the best, and I hope that by far the most of it will be found amusing and not without its fair share of the power of entertainment."
