Description

I conducted a WorldCat search for this book on November 21, 2012 and found only 3 libraries in the world that have a copy of an 1884 edition, not the 1878 edition, of this work.

The complete wording on the title page of this book is as follows:

Superstition in All Ages by John Meslier, A Catholic Priest, who, After a pastoral service of thirty years at Etrepigny and But in Champagne, France,  wholly abjured religious dogmas, and left as his last will and testament to his parishioners, and to the world, to be published after his death, the following pages, entitled Common Sense. Translated from the French original, by Miss Anna Knoop.

Voltaire, in a letter to D'Alembert dated February, 1762, wrote the following about this book: "They have printed in Holland the Testament of John Meslier. I trembled in horror in reading it. The testimony of a priest, who, in dying, asks God's pardon for having taught Christianity, must be a great weight in the balance of Liberals." pp. 19-20.

In reality this book was written by Baron D'Holback; see Stein 1329.
