Description

Quoted from the author's Chapter 1, p. 5.

"Since the word [chastity] has different meanings in popular use, let us be clear frim the start in what sense we take it. As it is generally understood the law of chastity means that children before the age of puberty — the reason why I include these will appear presently — must not be "indecent" in ' behavior or language: that between puberty and marriage both males and females shall abstain entirely from sexual indulgence or acts or language that stimulate the sexual impulse; that married folk shall confine themselves to their mutual commerce; and that all shall abstain from any other form of sexual indulgence than this normal conjugal intercourse. The law, thus stated, is still so important a part of our general culture and is so heavily emphasized, even after a hundred years of fierce challenge of tradition, that the proverbial visitor from another planet would imagine that the answer to the rebellious "Why?" would leap to the lips of at least professional moralists."

Diderot, the Frech philosopher, defined masturbation as "giving nature a helping hand." We also now know that sexual relations was once considered so sacred that it was called the "sacred fire" and putting that fire out was as important as food and water.
