Description

The complete title is as follows: A HISTORY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR: The Record of Nazi Savagery, the United Nations' Measures that Saved the World from Hitlerian
Domination, and a Look at What the Future Holds.

Quoted from the author's "Introduction:"

"This is not a chronicle of battles or a study of the strategical ability of Commanders. It is a consideration of the Great War in its human and historical perspective. In the golden years that are surely coming in spite of all the blunders of our statesmen, soldiers, and oracles the historian will look back upon our tragic experience and count it one of the four grimmest catastrophies that have occurred during the last 3,000 years. The first was when, in the 5th Century, European civilization was trodden under the feet of the barbarians after the fall of Rome. The second was when, in the 15th Century, the bubonic plague, feeding. upon the foulness of artistic Europe as well as of Asia, slew 50,000,000 folk in awful agony and left a broad swath of desolation across the entire known world. The third was the Thirty Years War in the 17th Century, in which the Protestant and Catholic nations of Europe sought to bludgeon each other into true religion. We have lived through the fourth and in some respects the worst. There have been bloodier wars, in the sense that in proportion to their total number more combatants were killed, but our war was conducted with such savagery that the white bones of men, women, and children and the still more ghastly mounds of human ash fill countless pits and trenches, from the coast of France to the plains of the Ukraine. Never before did the calamity circle the entire globe and darken the life of the whole race: never were such monstrous weapons of destruction."
used : never was so much of the wealth that man so laborious -
ly creates wasted in five years .
