Description

Quoted from the author's "Preface."

"Since the title plainly tells the aim and contents of this work, very few introductory words are needed. I would merely apprise the reader that it is not simply a collection of sketches of the picturesque life of prostitutes in different ages and environments. It is, as far as the historical evidence is available — and the bibliography at the close will show through what a range of literature I have sought it — a complete study, from the historical viewpoint, of an aspect of sex-life which is of exceptional interest yet very scantily treated in our literature. The only manual in the English language. W. W. Sanger' s History of Prostitution, is not merely now rare, but it is really a study of modern prostitution with a very imperfect and not very accurate historical introduction, chiefly borrowed from Dufour's ancient work. Mr. Havelock Ellis has only a few pages, not wholly accurate, on the historical interest in the sixth volume of his Psychology of Sex, and Professor Westermarck is as unsatisfactory in his Origin and Development of the Moral Ideas. It will be noticed that articles in the best works of reference find it almost impossible to recommend to the reader any available literature on the subject. I have here collected the facts from a large collection of general historical works and local studies, and I offer my readers a unique and complete study of one of the most interesting aspects of sexual behavior."
