Description

Quoted from the author's Chapter 1, p. 5.

"The Little Blue Books which I have written on the origin of religion, the revolt against it, and phases of morals, form an indispensable historical introduction to the study of Christ and Christianity.

The version of the religious history of man-kind which the Christian usually cherishes is
pathetically inaccurate. Human reason, he  thinks, feels a certain magnetic force, a religious
instinct, which directs it toward the Pole Star of the universe: God . But the base metals of the earth distract and confuse it. In its vagaries it points in a hundred directions. It frames a thousand religions. At last God, who contemplates these pitiful and futile wanderings during three thousand years of civilization, and some tens of thousands of years of prehistoric life, gives a partial revelation of himself through the prophets of one of the smallest nations on the earth. It does not suffice; and then God takes human form, and brings the full blaze of truth to man. And the nations fall upon their knees, and turn from sin and error to virtue and knowledge.

This is as false in every syllable as was the astronomy of the Chaldeans or the natural history
of the Middle Ages."
