Description

Quoted from the author's Chapter 1, pp. 5-6.

"The best elements of the Christian code were the common property of the Greek-Roman civilization. The only ideas which were distinctive, or nearly distinctive, of the new religion — hell as a punishment of sin and vicarious atonement — were immoral, and the modern Churches progressively disown them. As to the phrase Christian civilization I will show in later booklets that the restoration of civilization after an unprecedented stretch of barbarism
in Europe was certainly not due to the Church. The only legitimate use the phrase ever had is
that by burning a few milion rebels the Church forced practically all Europe to profess Christianity, so prior to the 19th Century the civilization of Europe and its American extension
was Christian as distinguished from that of China, India, Japan, or Islam. It professed the Christian creed."
