The Encyclopedia of Essential Knowledge (in 4 Volumes)

Haldeman-Julius Publications

Girard, KS

Quoted from the author's "Foreword."

"One's first impulse on turning over the pages of a modern encyclopedia is to repeat the saying of the ancient Roman cynic when he was taken to see the shops in the Forum at Rome: "How many things there are that I don't want!" You may or may not reflect that there are millions of folk with different information-requirements than your own whose joint demands make these vast stores of knowledge necessary. But since this compels the encyclopedia to run to 20 or 30 volumes and confines it to public institutions to which you may not easily have access, you wonder whether it is not possible to compile an encyclopedia containing all the information that we common folk commonly need and purchasable for the price of a good dinner.

This is an attempt to supply the average man's need. By "essential knowledge" it is, of course, not suggested that every thoughtful man and woman ought to know all that it contains. It means that the work gives the 1 percent of all the learning in our large encyclopedias that is generally useful; and this, with the addition of much that they do not give but ought to do, I present here to meet the needs of the general reader. Naturally there is a strict limit to the amount of scientific or technical information I can give in a small work, but I trust that 50 years spent as a "pedler in culture" have enabled me to select the facts which you need-in order to understand or check the statements you are most apt to meet in your daily paper, weekly, monthly, or general reading. But not for a moment do I confine my attention to the man in the street. Our most learned specialists in science or engineering make, when they turn aside to guide the public on religious questions, blunders as grave as those perpetrated by the divine who breaks into history or sociology, or the literary man who professes to have valuable opinions about science. Sometimes, in fact, as in the case of the late Sir Arthur Eddington and Sir James Jeans, they are so eager to please the angels or the police that they blunder egregiously about the history of their own science. To all these, and to their pupils, as well as to the general public, I offer this compendium of such real knowledge as it seems important to have for the general purposes of life."
