What America Could Produce and Consume

Haldeman-Julius Company

Girard, KS

Quoted from the author's p. 6.

"One important point is that we shall recognize that it is the application of science that has made labor, or work, several times more fertile in producing wealth than it was a century ago, when the machine-age was still in its infancy. A good deal of harm is done by repeating in our time economic formulae that may at least have been very near the truth a hundred years ago but are now misleading. The fact that with the same amount of manual labor we can and do today produce 10 times as much wealth as our grandfathers did is easily proved. It is difficult to compare American statistics of a century ago with those of today on account of the vast expansion of the country, but in the case of an old country like Great Britain the facts are easily ascertained."
