Description

Quoted from the author's "Preface," pp. vi8i - viii.

"IT seems a remarkable fact that a man should rise to such eminence as M. Clemenceau has attained and yet have no English biographer. Few French statesmen, it is true, have English biographers; but the events of the last two years have shown that in the present French Premier we have a personality of commanding interest. In this strenuous period of young men he has, at the age of seventy-seven, proved the strongest man of Europe in will and intellect. There must be many English readers who desire a closer acquaintance than the daily press affords with his life, his character, and his sources of inspiration.

I had put my hand to the task of supplying this need before I learned that Mr. Hyndman had  for some time been engaged upon a biography. His elaborate work, however, does not meet the more general and popular interest for which I would cater; nor does he enlarge so freely as I proposed to do on the remarkable volumes written by the French Premier and the creed
of life from which he draws his strength and integrity. So I have proceeded, and trust I am right in my judgment that the two works have separate fields of circulation. My little work is based upon some small French biographies (by Le Blond, Brisson, Poinsot, and others), the published writings of M. Clemenceau, and a number of biographical dictionaries of various
dates."
