The full title of the work is as follows:

Thumbscrew and Rack, Torture Implements Employed in the XVth and XVIthe Centruries, for the Promulgation of Christianity.

The author offers an account of an exhibit of torure instruments that were exibited in New York city. He writes "The exhibit does not consist of
duplicates or csimiles of the instruments of torture, but of the original instruments themselves, which in the past did the deadly and infamous work of breaking the bones and tearing the flesh of human beings. They are mostly from the royal castle of Nuremberg, in Bavaria, but indude Spanish and Italian specimens The collar introduced here, it will be noted, is a Spanish article --- a piece of bric-a-brac from the Holy Inquisition."

In addition to written descriptions of the torturer's implements, he offers accurate drawings of some of the instruments which he describes.
