There are only 9 libraries in the that have a copy of this work in any edition.

"In reply to the New York Observer, of July 10 and Sept. 27, 1877, refuting charges brought against Paine's character and stories of his supposed recantation." "The Observer's second attack" Nov. 1, 1877: p. 18-23." "Ingersoll's second reply" Nov. 2, 1877: p. 23-25." Quoted from WorldCat.

The editor of a volume of Ingersoll's works writes about Ingersoll the following: "Colonel Robert G. Ingersoll occupies a unique position. He is to a large extent the productof his own generation. A man of the times, for the times. He has had no predecessor, he will have no successor.. Such a man was impossible a hundred years ago; the probabilities are that a century hence no such man will be needed. His work needs only to be done once."

McCabe writes about Ingersoll that "He was admittedly the foremost orator of the United States, and he is probably second to Voltaire in the record of enlightenment."
