Hazlitt, William (ed.)

Complete Works of Michael De Montaigne

Wiilliam T. Amies

Illustrated Hazlitt Edition

This 1879 Illustrated Hazlitt edition of the Complete Works of Michael De Montaigne is very rare as a October 23, 2012  search of WorldCat revealed 17 libraries in the world have a copy of this rare edition.

The complete title of this work is "The Complete Works of Michael De Montaigne, Comprising His Essays, Letters, and His Journey Through Germany and Italy. Together With a Comprehensive Life, and Side and Footnotes From All the Commentators, Fully Explanatory of the Text; Biographic and Bibliographical Notices, etc., etc."

Montaigne lived from 1533 til 1593. The essays on his travels were found 178 years after his death. During these travels he passed a number of stones, so many that Will Durant writes they "would have built a pretty pyramid."

McCabe writes about Montaigne's "Essays" that they "rendered immortal service to Rationalism."
