The full title of this work, as advertised in the 1876 edition of "The Burgess-Underwood Debate" is follows: "The World's Sages, Thinkers and Reformers, Being Biographical Sketches of Leading Philosophers, Teachers, Skeptics, Innovators, Founders of New Schools of Thought and Religion, Disbelievers in Current Theology, Scientists and Humanitarians of the World," [and it continues] "from the early age of Menu down through the following 3000  years to our own time."

This 1,000 page plus work was advertised as "A Whole Library in a Single Volume." The book is divided into four parts:

Part I: From Menu to Christ.
Part II: From Christ to the close of the eighteenth century.
Part II: From the eighteenth century to the present time.
Part IV: Those still living.

In short, this 2nd edition of the work has a biographical account of 300 of the world's greatest thinkers.

The companion work to this volume is Bennett's "Champions of the Church: Biographical Sketches of Eminent Christians."
