Description

While the French was not translated in this original first edition it has now been translated by Dr. Monty Laycox of the University of Central Missouri.

The third volume, which was printed in 1815, is not part of this original first edition.

Gibbons was the author of "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire."

He studied at Oxford (Magdalen) and wrote the following about his time there. "I spent fourteen months at Magdalen College; they proved the fourteen months the most idle and unprofitable of my whole life." (Vol 1, p. 34.)

Joseph McCabe refers to Gibbon as "the father of modern history."
